Another tragedy will occur for some local Philadelphia charter schools, as the due date nears for budget cuts. Yet many Philadelphia schools have already come to an end, sending saddened students home for the very last time. As well, people are worried that this may have a major influence on what money will be spent on, especially sports. A significant twenty percent is now estimated to be taken from all charter schools, which could drastically affect school’s passionate athletes. I interviewed a local teacher at Tacony Academy, who just happens to be the athletic director at the school.
“The state wants to eliminate sports from charter schools to potentially save money.” Ryan Nase stated, “Sports teach lessons that cannot be taught in the classroom. Students can learn work ethic, discipline, resilience and also competition.” Without enough supply of money, there will be a enormous amount of changes to be made in sports. Its the icing, just without the cake. Not only will after school sports be in a state of catastrophe, but as well as the sports that do take place during school.
Many students do not realize that not only can gym can be a great way to have fun, but a way to encourage students to exercise. I also questioned the school’s science teacher who was very troubled when I informed him about the situation. During the very brief interview, I asked if the obesity rate would increase if gym was not an option for Tacony.
“Yes, it would increase. We need physical exercise, there isn’t a way we can get rid of it. We wouldn’t burn enough calories.” So in today’s aspect, are schools about the business, or about the love of the game? Can sports really exist without money? My names Victoria Lynn, and I think we know the answer.
