History in the making: Tacony baseball 2014

“I feel famous!” Those were the first words out of Richard’s mouth as we sat down to chat about the so far extremely successful season of our very own Tacony Lions baseball team. Richard Rosario is a senior here at TACS, and has been on the team since his freshman year. He is one of three captains of the team and plays first base. You can tell just by the way he talks about the game that he is truly passionate about it. When I asked Rich one thing Tacony students should know about him, the first thing that came to mind was the fact that he takes pride in being a leader. He continued to say that even with injuries he always makes it a point to give it his all out on the field. The current record for the team is 5-1, Rich even made sure to include that they “technically” have 6 wins and 1 loss but the one game was a scrimmage so it didn’t count towards there record. Tacony sports have really taken a turn for the better this year with the addition of Mr. Nase the athletic director, Mr. Cecchini the assistant coach for the boys baseball team, Abernethy Senior the first base coach, and Ms. McNichol the girls softball coach. Of course, much of the boys success this season is also credited to Mr. Abernethy the head coach, who Rich says never fails to “Pump up the team” before a game.  A typical practice for the boys includes stretching, reviewing plays, tossing, and base running. I also asked Richard his thoughts on the teams overall improvement since last season. He mentioned that the addition of some new players, including help with defense from Jeremiah Alston, and Winter Villenueva who plays shortstop, have really helped the team grow as a whole. Next year Richard is attending Philadelphia Community College and is thinking about continuing his baseball career there.  I ended the interview by asking if Richard ever gets emotional thinking about playing his last game, considering it would be his last one ever, at least at Tacony. He said that “It’s hard to think that it is my last year here, but I am excited to see the outcome of this great season.”

This coming week the boys have three games. May second is a home game, everyone is encouraged to come out and support the team at Lawncrest Rec (start time approx 3:15) . Go Lions!
